It was formerly known as Ekana International Cricket Stadium and later on 05 November 2018 renamed in honor of former Indian Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

The Lucknow Cricket Stadium is located at Ekana Sportz City, Sector 7, Amar Shaheed Path, Gomati Nagar, Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh 226010.
It is a public-private partnership stadium that follows the guidelines and specifications laid by the ICC and BCCI for hosting an International Cricket Match.
In May 2019, Afghanistan Cricket Board requested the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to play their matches in this venue. In July 2019, BCCI approved this venue as the third home ground for Afghanistan Cricket Team in India.

The stadium witnessed its first international match on 06 November 2018 becoming the 52nd stadium to host an international match in India, It was a T20 International match between India and West Indies where Rohit Sharma scored a century and became the first cricketer ever to score four centuries in T20I later on India won the match by 71 runs.
