Early Life

Yuvraj was born on the 12th of December 1981 in Punjab to Yograj Singh, a former Indian Cricketer, and Shabnam Singh. As a kid he was really good at Skating and at the age of 10, he was the Champion of U-14 Roller Skating. His father threw away the medal and told him to forget Skating and just concentrate on Cricket.

Yuvraj studied at DAV Public school in Chandigarh which was also the school of Kapil Dev, he completed his graduation degree in commerce from DAV College, Punjab University, Chandigarh.

Career

Yuvraj started his career from Punjab U-16 in the 1995-96 season against Jammu and Kashmir. In 1996-97 Yuvraj was promoted to Punjab U-19.

Yuvraj made his First-class debut in the 1997-98 Ranji Trophy season against Orissa but unfortunately, he was dismissed for a duck.

Yuvraj worked harder and harder and his work paid off when he was selected for the U-19 National Team.

India won the 2000 U-19 Cricket World Cup under the captaincy of Mohammed Kaif. Yuvraj Singh’s all-round performance earned him the Player of the Tournament award.

The Big Stage

After an impressive performance in the  U-19 team, Sourav Ganguly gave opportunities to the youngsters like Mohammed Kaif and Yuvraj Singh to represent the senior team.

Yuvraj was selected for the 2000 ICC Knockout Trophy. He made his international debut on 3rd October 2000 against Kenya where he did not get to bat. But the 19 year old showed his ability and intent to perform under pressure in the quarter-final match against Australia. He scored 84 of 80 balls against a pace attack containing Glenn McGrath, Brett Lee, and Jason Gillespie and won the man of the match award for his performance.

Yuvraj scored his maiden ODI century (102* from 85 balls) against Bangladesh at Dhaka on 11 April 2003.

Yuvraj was signed by the Yorkshire County Cricket Club for the 2003 County season. He became the second Indian after Sachin Tendulkar to represent the County.

Yuvraj made his Test debut on 16 October 2003 in his home ground Mohali against New Zealand.2007 World Twenty-20

Yuvraj was the Vice-Captain of the Indian side at the inaugural ICC World Twenty-20 in South Africa.

In the super 8 matches against England at Durban, he scored the Fastest Fifty ever. He did so by smashing Six Sixes in an over off Stuart Broad. His 12 ball 50 was not only the fastest fifty in a T-20 game but also the fastest in any form of International Cricket.

In the semi-final against Australia, he top-scored with 70 off 30 balls and also hit the longest six of the tournament (119 meters) of Brett Lee’s bowling. That knock was later renamed as the Best Twenty20 Batting Performance of 2007 by ESPN Cricinfo. He was named in the Team of the Tournament by Cricinfo for the 2007 T20I World Cup.

In September 2007, MS Dhoni and Yuvraj Singh were named as the ODI captain and Vice-Captain respectively.

2011 Golden World Cup

2011 ICC Cricket World Cup was going to be held in India. It was Sachin’s last World Cup and it was the last chance to fulfill the dream of the Little Master. Every Indian fan wanted the team to win the World Cup on their home soil and that could have been impossible without the man Yuvraj Singh.

Yuvraj Singh was at his peak in 2011 he was in the form of his life in the 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup but at the same time, he had some respiratory problems. Yuvraj knew something isn’t right with his body but continued to his Nation duty ignoring it.

Yuvraj had a dream run at the 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup. In 9 matches he scored 362 runs including one century and four half-centuries.

He was the man with a golden arm for India, with his slow left-arm spinners he took 15 Wickets.

With his all-around performance in the tournament, Yuvraj was chosen as Player of the Tournament.

Yuvraj won four man-of-the-match awards in the World Cup, the joint-most along with Sri Lanka’s Arvinda de Silva in 1996 and South Africa’s Lance Klusener in 1999.

Yuvraj became the First all-rounder to score 300-plus runs and take 15 wickets in a single World Cup. During India’s match against Ireland, he became the first player to take 5 Wickets and score 50 runs in a World Cup match.

Yuvraj was named in the World ODI XI by ICC and Cricinfo. He was named in the Team of the Tournament for the 2011 World Cup by ICC and Cricinfo for his performance in 2011.

An Innings against Cancer

The man who was at his Peak in 2011 suddenly saw his fortune changing in a few months. In November Yuvraj was detected with Cancer. People thought Yuvi might never return to the field again.

Yuvraj was diagnosed with a cancerous tumor stage-1 in his left lung and underwent chemotherapy treatment at Cancer Research Institute in Boston, United States as well as the Indiana University Melvin and Bren Simon Cancer Center in Indianapolis, Indiana.

In March 2012, Yuvraj was discharged from the hospital after completing the third and final cycle of chemotherapy and returned to India in April.

Second Innings

Yuvi rose like a Phoenix from the ashes and then return to prove the mettle this man possesses. Yuvi started from the basics again to begin the second innings of his career.

Yuvi scored 600 runs in just 5 Ranji matches.

He was part of the 15-member squad for the 2012 ICC World Twenty20 in Sri Lanka.

He was the most expensive player in the 2014 and 2015 IPL seasons.

Yuvraj scored his career-best score of 150 off 127 balls against England in January 2017.

He was also selected to play in the Champions Trophy 2017. After that Yuvraj was dropped from the squad failing to clear the Yo-Yo test. He also cleared the Yo-Yo test later but was never picked up by the team again.

On 10 June 2019, Yuvraj held a press conference in Mumbai and announced his retirement from all formats of the game.
