As of now, there are 12 Cricket World Cups held. Australia is the most successful team that has won the tournament five times, India and West Indies twice each, while Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and England have won it once.

History

The Inaugural Cricket World Cup was hosted on 7 June 1975 by England. The first three World Cups were held in England and were officially known as the Prudential Cup after the sponsor’s Prudential plc. The matches consisted of 60 overs per team, played during the daytime in traditional form, with the players wearing whites and using a red ball.

From the 1987 tournament onwards, hosting of the Cricket World Cup has been shared between countries under an unofficial rotation system.

When the tournament was first time held outside England, India and Pakistan jointly hosted the tournament in 1987. In this season of the World Cup, games were reduced from 60 overs to 50 overs per innings, because of the shorter daylight hours compared with England.

The 1992 World Cup introduced some changes to the game, such as white ball, colored clothing, day/night matches, and a change to the fielding restriction rules.

Trophy

The ICC Cricket World Cup Trophy is handed over to the Winners of the World Cup. The Trophy which we currently see was created for the 1999 Championship and was the first permanent prize in the tournament’s history. Before this Trophy different trophies were made for each World Cup.

The Cricket World Cup Trophy was designed and produced in London over a period of two months by a team of craftsmen from Garrard& co.

The Present trophy is made of silver and gilt and features a Golden Globe held up by three silver columns. The columns are shaped as stumps and bails that represent the three fundamental aspects of Cricket ie Batting, Bowling, and Fielding and the globe characterizes a Cricket Ball.
The seam of the ball(globe) is tilted to symbolize the axial tilt of the Earth. It stands 60 centimeters high and weighs approximately 11 kilograms.

On the base of the Trophy names of the previous winners are engraved space for a total of twenty inscriptions are available.

The ICC keeps the original Trophy and a replica of the Trophy differing only in the inscriptions is permanently awarded to the Winning Team.
